Explore the Lyell Highway as it follows the course of the river past poplars and willows, hopfields and orchards, towards Tasmania’s mountains and wilderness. You will pass through historic farming settlements and stunning highlands, to witness the stark beauty of the Central Plateau where 10,000 years ago glaciers scraped the rocks bare, carving the cliffs and digging out the bed of Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest lake.

Turning off the westward highway, a myriad of lakes, all teeming with trout, sparkle across the plateau. And to top it off, between Miena to Breona in the north the partially unsealed road will begin to descend and tall forests with cascading waterfalls will surprisingly loom before you.

Each place has its own surprises - sapphires panned from old mines near Branxholm and Derby; farm cheese at Pyengana; skiing and walks on Ben Lomond’s craggy heights; echoes of a mining heritage at Derby and the Blue Tier; a desert of golden sand dunes at St Helens; rough-cut local granite in the towering Eddystone Point lighthouse; sweeping views of forests and farmlands as the Mathinna road descends to Fingal Valley.

You can witness some of the most stunning pastoral scenery, colonial towns and villages, where sandstone church spires overlook English oaks, elms and chestnuts, Georgian cottages line quiet streets and stone bridges are reflected in leaf-dappled water.
